You ARE creative. Let me inspire you!
Summer is officially here! I love every season and Summer offers so much: more outdoor time, more stargazing, more flowers, more fun! Well, maybe not more fun, remember, I love all the seasons.
For many, Summer means the kids are out of school, and you can expect to hear, “I’m Bored!” at least once or twice a week. So, what do you do when you hear that dreaded exclamation?
Although it’s been quite some time since I’ve had to prepare a response to those words. I do have 4 grandkiddos ages 5 – 10 and there are definitely times I need something to help them avoid the boredom. In our house, bored kiddos lead to whatever is the opposite of fun!
Here’s my secret weapon. We play in my studio! OK, I know that not everyone has a studio, but I’ll bet most everyone has a kitchen or dining room table that works just as well.
Of course, because I am in love with Zentangle® I have taught the Zentangle Method of drawing to my grandkiddos. The youngest does a lot of scribbling, but it makes him happy to be tangling with us! I have found that children ages 6 and older usually do well with the Zentangle Method. All children are unique, and you know your kiddos best.
We don’t always tangle but we draw and paint more than anything else. I stick with watercolors because it’s so easy to clean up! I do have lots of paper supplies from my card making love and every once in a while, I take out my stamps and ink pads and we stamp.
I was recently exposed to the idea of coloring together. Adult coloring books are all the rage these days, so what’s stopping you from picking up a coloring book for everyone, age appropriate, but don’t be afraid to let the kiddos draw in the grown-up coloring book. Or let them draw their own picture to color. You can add color with anything really; colored pencils, markers, crayons, or whatever works for you, and there are lots of inexpensive options to choose from.
If you need ideas check out Pinterest. Search for "art for kids" or something similar. You’ll find more than enough art project ideas to keep the kiddos busy all Summer! I promise you will be glad you did!
Playing with the kiddos at the kitchen table doesn’t have to be complicated. It works better when it’s simple! As long as you are making art and having fun together any art form works. And this time spent together creating something is time they will hold in their hearts forever!
Til next time,
Be You & Be Happy!
